A crisp and finely chiseled work from the last quarter of the 19th century, the bronze has a rather complex original patina with hints of gold and aged bronze achieved from a high burnish of the natural material, this set against hues of green, red and brown from chemical patination. The seated Artemis/Diana holds her bow in hand as she rests on a fully developed Greek ottoman, the turned bronze legs stretched with braces stylized by repeating incising. The natural flow of her figure, garment and each element in the scene is noteworthy; every aspect of her body is perfectly chiseled, resulting in photographic like detail in her toes, strands of hair, arrows and bench. The surface is sealed with beeswax and has been cleaned and polished in our shop. It is a most striking piece for the collector passionate about the Romantic works.
